The mystical powers of the [G 29 / Sancta Camisia] were put to the test in AD911 when Chartres was being attacked by a Viking leader named Rollon.
According to legend, the Bishop of Chartres took the Sancta Camisia to the ramparts of the city and held it up high for the attacking Viking to see. Rollon is said to have fled at the sight of it. A probably fatal attack was averted, a terrible enemy was stopped in his tracks and the power of the Sancta Camisia as protector of Chartres was demonstrated.
This is almost certainly a legend, but it illustrates the reverent belief in the relic and the strength of [L3 207 / popular religion] at the time.
